Things to do

Bird watching – Stroll quietly around the 4 acres of wooded land at Frangipani Lodge and you will be astounded by the variety of birds you will see. Pay special attention to the array of smaller birds you might otherwise miss. For the more adventurous and active, a longer stroll on the banks of the lagoon, along its reeds and Mangroves, will open up a vista of waders and water birds. Books are available in the lodge to help you to identify these birds. Bird watching is recommended around the year but is particularly good between November and March.

Boating on the lagoon – Boat rides along the lagoon to see the birds and other water fauna in their natural habitat, or just to take in the ambiance of the wetlands, can be arranged. Just ask our caretaker to do the needful.

Game fishing – Kalametiya is an excellent coastal fishing location offering keen anglers the opportunity to target a range of game fish including Tuna, Spanish mackerel, Trevally, Barracuda, Sailfish and Grouper. These can be fished off the beach or rocks near the lagoon mouth or by trolling off a boat. If you are lucky you might even catch a sight of Dolphins and Whales that frequent these waters.

Boat hires will need to be negotiated but our caretaker will assist in this as  required. Fishing tackle is not provided so do bring your own and the use of personal safety equipment, e.g. life vests, is strongly recommended. Remember also to protect yourself from the sun and to take plenty of fluids when you are out at sea.

Places of interest – Frangipani Lodge is centrally located and is a great base for exploring this area. Places of interest include Ussangoda that offers stunning views of the surrounding coastline, the blowhole at Kudawella, the Madunagala hot springs and several ancient temples in the area including the Mulkirigala Raja Maha Viharaya.

For wildlife enthusiasts the Ridiyagama tank, another area rich in bird life and which is a very pleasant drive via Ambalantota is of special interest. Other major national parks such as Udawalawe, Bundala and Yala can also be easily accessed from Frangipani Lodge.

Turtle watching - Rekawa beach is known for the Turtles who come to lay their eggs there. Drive out and see this awesome sight.
